Australian Organic Schools Program
Australian Organic Limited has built a comprehensive schools program, ‘Why Organic?’. This free, ACARA aligned program is comprised of 3 units each containing fully resourced downloadable lesson plans, experimental and practical activities.
See the ‘Program Outlines’ section below to access the program by age group.
Unit 1: From Farm To Me
Unit 1 provides an understanding of where food comes from and what processes it undergoes to move from the farm to the table. A brief overview of organic farming practices and methods and how those methods contribute to sustainability is explained. Additionally, this unit details the underlying principles and specific holistic requirements surrounding certification of an organic product and how to identify if a product is certified.
Unit 2: Organic for Brain, Body & Being
The question, Why Organic? is the cornerstone of Unit 2. The Four Principles of Organic Agriculture are used to develop understanding regarding the values and beliefs of organic farming. An eating pyramid helps to illustrate what balanced nutrition may look like and why choosing organic produce can be beneficial. Understanding individual environmental impact, specifically regarding recycling household wastes is integrated to highlight how organic practices contribute to sustainable living in Australia.Unit 3: Get Growing
The importance and benefits of eating seasonally, the wonder of soil as well as the basics of starting a productive organic vegetable garden are the focus of this Unit. Explanations regarding the nutritional differences found in seasonal produce, and how eating seasonally contributes to sustainable living practices. The critical role soil plays in human life, how to nurture soil as well as a beginners’ guide to having a productive organic vegetable garden are also explored.Unit 1: From Farm to Me
